What Is Cheek Augmentation?
Patients come in for cheek augmentation to achieve the well-defined cheekbones to achieve a more youthful appearance or to create balance with other facial features. As a person ages, their prominent cheekbones begin to droop and lose definition. Through cheek augmentation, patients can still have well-defined cheekbones through cheek implants and repositioning of the cheek tissues through a face lift.
A cheek implant will benefit those with congenital deformities of the cheekbones or malar bone. The use of cheek implants for cheek augmentation provides very predictable results. Aside from cheek implants, innovations in cosmetic technology allow surgeons to make use of dermal fillers such as Restylane or Perlane for cheek enhancement.
What is a Cheek Augmentation Like for Patients?
During consultation, our team will go through your medical history and may require additional tests to determine if you are fit for a cheek augmentation. Dr. Timothy Jones will also set expectations to determine if cheek augmentation is the best procedure to achieve your desired results. Patients will be provided instructions for surgical preparation as well as potential risks of the cheek augmentation.
Patients can have a cheek augmentation through cheek implants. A short incision will be made under the chin or inside the mouth, between the gums and the lower lip. The implant will be inserted in between the bone and chin tissue and will be positioned to achieve a younger profile.
Patients also have the option to have their cheek profile enhanced through different facelift techniques. The transoral or mouth approach is used when the cheek augmentation is done as an isolated procedure. An implant is inserted through an incision made above the upper teeth. The transpalpebral or eyelid approach is commonly used in conjunction with other procedures. An incision is made in the eyelid for the insertion of smaller cheek implants.
Cheek augmentations done in our office are performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. On the average, a cheek augmentation procedure will last about 2-3 hours.
What Can Patients Expect After Their Cheek Augmentation?
The effects of a cheek augmentation are permanent and can be immediately appreciated by our patients. Patients may feel bruising, pain, and swelling in the cheek area which will gradually disappear in a few days and can easily be managed by the medications that we will prescribe. In just 10 days after the cheek augmentation, patients can already start showing off their youthful features.
