Uneven skin tone is a concern for both female and male patients. At our practice, before we address the issue, we first educate our patients on the causes. Uneven skin tone is influenced by a combination of factors; it doesn’t have a single cause.
Unprotected sun exposure is one cause. When exposed to the sun’s damaging UV rays, the skin produces the hormone melanin as a form of protection. Mostly brown in color, melanin can clump in a certain portion of the skin, resulting in the appearance of age spots.
Hormonal shifts, particularly in women, can lead to the appearance of brown spots and uneven skin tone. Women who are pregnant, taking contraceptive pills, or are going through menopause may find themselves with unsightly patches of discolored skin. Unfortunately, most cases of skin discoloration due to hormonal fluctuations do not fade even after the hormone levels return back to normal.
Scarring may also contribute to the appearance of uneven skin tone. In acne scarring, an overproduction of melanocytes while the skin heals can lead to brown discoloration.
